Sailboat Spars Masthead Welding Tips

Sailboat Spars Magic Dragon Masthead welding...make sure if you are welding this outside that you build yourself a make shift shelter. The day we were welding this it was pretty windy. Tarps and a frame do the trick nicely.

Some things that you might want to consider about a masthead fitting or head box. It really comes down too, How are you going to use your boat? Racing or Cruising?

Key: When working on your mast make sure you do not drill your holes too close together. holes closely spaced up and down the mast are not as weakening to the mast as holes close together running around the mast.

This is the opening that was cut for the masthead to be welded into. It creates a sleeve for it to slid into. Then everything will be welded together to create one piece.

On larger boats the masthead includes connectors for standing rigging. All electrical that would normally run through the main mast, (tubular section) is running through the radar intenta mast. The reason is at times the main mast will be setting or laid down on the deck. In order to get under bridges... This sailboat mast weights 300 pounds by itself, add all the rigging, plus...about 500 pounds.
