The sailboat specs for our boat took on a canoe shape hull. We used the canoe shape to build upon the knowledge of the designers and navel architects that already went before us. We used them for a stepping stone.
The foundation of boat design basics had been laid years prior. Of course we modified, changed areas that fit our wants and needs better and tried to improve on it. |
When building a sailboat, keep in mind when you design a boat, your looking into the future. Building a sailboat that will weather a knock down, unexpected waves, storms, water spouts. You will have to weather the storm, so build the foundation right.
Stern means: rear part of a vessel, aft, toward the stem or tail, near the steering area, ships wheel, rudder -vertical piece at the rear of a boat.
There are all kinds of sailboat types and shadows. Keep in mind when your building a sailboat that the stern plays an important roll in the sailboat speed or hull speed. This stern area should be flat, shallow angle to the water level. A boat design that leaves little or no wake, disturbance is a good design.

Boat displacement means weight or volume of fluid displaced by a floating or submerged body or object.
Displacement of boats is like taking a empty Mountain Dew can (Mountain Dew my favorite) and float it in a pool filled with water. As long as there is air in the can it will float. |
Archimedes: Greek mathematician, physicist and inventor.
Archimedes is the natural law by which part of this operates to determine the displacement of boats. The space occupied, volume beneath the water surface of a floating boat displaces a certain volume of water.
When you figure out the weight of the volume of water, you will find it weighs exactly the same as the boat. From there the total weight of a boat surprise gives you where the waterlines should be.
Just like with any type of design, construction, it is a important to double check calculations several times.
With boat building and sailboat designs make sure to keep in mind when hiring someone else to do this job, they should be a boat owner themselves. They can truly say been there, done that kind of first hand experience. With this being said, it helps to incorporate features in your new design to help limit your upkeep expenses.
When you plan ahead it will help reduce maintenance and repair costs. The simplest design is the best. Always keep in mind your intended use of your yacht. Is it going to be used for racing, cruising, day sailing?
Sailboat designs applied to Magic Dragon are for seaworthiness, dryness, speed, and comfort. Decide which qualities you want the most.
To achieve a good boat building design, it is important to think about your intended use. Once you decide stick with it through the whole design process.
This should answer some of your questions on how to design a boat.
Does size matter? Main dimensions...
Unlimited ocean crossing puts greater demands on a boat compared to sheltered water use. For us carrying enough fuel, water, supplies, and collecting rainwater, plus with standing strong winds and heavy seas.
Take two seaworthy boats of similar displacement; the longer one will usually have better performance, but its carrying capabilities will be almost the same as the shorter one.

7. Produce preliminary design to work off of
